Distributed Energy Research/ARES

The Distributed Energy Program of the Department of Energy supports cost-effective research and development aimed at lowering costs, reducing emissions, and improving reliability and performance to expand opportunities for the installation of distributed energy equipment today and in the future.

The Program focuses on the development of combined heat and power technologies including:

  • advanced reciprocating engines
  • industrial gas turbines
  • micro turbines
  • advanced materials and sensors
  • fuel combustion
  • thermal energy technologies

Current projects at Argonne in support of DOE’s Distributed Energy Program include:

  • Research to Improve Reciprocating Engines for Stationary Applications (ARES)

Current projects include:

Ignition Studies in a Rapid Compression Machine

Development of Laser Ignition Technology
