Bulk-Separation Experimental Facility

Argonne Materials Separation Facility: The large-scale physical separation facility shown above has been used to shred and separate the metals and plastics fractions of materials from automotive parts, obsolete appliance parts, computer housings and other electronic equipment. The physical separation facility includes a 35hp Untha shredder for size reduction, a two-stage rotary trommel, magnetic head pulleys on the conveyors, an eddy current separation system (for recovery of non-ferrous metals) and granulators for size reduction of plastics to about 1/4 to 1/16 inch size required for separation of individual plastics from each other by techniques such as density separation and froth flotation.
