Transportation Research Facilities

  • Advanced Powertrain Research Facility (APRF)
Argonne's APRF is the principal U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facility for assessing advanced and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technologies for the Vehicle Technologies Program.
  • Battery Analysis & Diagnostic Laboratory
Researchers use this lab to study advanced battery systems for applications such as hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and utility load-leveling during peak demand periods.
  • Engine Research Facility and Heavy-Duty Truck Engine Test Cell
Argonne's Engine Research Facility and Heavy-Duty Truck Engine Test Cell allow engineers to study in-cylinder combustion phenomena under realistic operating conditions and find ways to continually improve diesel engine performance and reliability, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce harmful exhaust emissions.
  • Fuel Cell Test Facility
Researchers use this independent testing center to evaluate and validate fuel cell technologies.
  • Tribology Laboratory
Engineers use Argonne’s Tribology Laboratory to conduct research on advanced tribological systems (surface engineered materials, lubricants, fuels, and fuel/lubricant additives) for use in aggressive environments.
